If you like MahJongg and solitaire card style games then you would be happy to learn that two games were recently released, one is free as a beer, other cost $10.
Those games are made by the indie company named Lost Luggage Studios.

Catalyst Deluxe

(free as beer)
Catalyst Deluxe is an engaging solitaire card game based on the 10-20-30 game. The game consists of matching sets of three cards whose face values total 10, 20, or 30 points. For instance, a 4, a 6, and a 10 would total 20 points and could be removed. With the Ace worth one point, and all face cards worth ten points each, this is a great game for all ages to build your math skills and exercise your mind. Veteran solitaire card game players looking for a new challenge… this is it! Catalyst Deluxe is an easy game to learn, but it is not an easy game to win. With all these features, one thing is definitely certain: Catalyst Deluxe will be the most engrossing solitaire card game you will ever play.

Features:

  • Two rule sets — Classic 10-20-30 rules plus our alternate Catalyst rules. Choose to play with or without jokers.
  • Six sets of card graphics
  • High score tracking and win/loss statistics
  • 15 original backgrounds
  • 21 card backs
  • Features original music by Bill Bois
  • Built To Be Casual — you can quit at any time and Catalyst Deluxe will save your progress automatically
  • Multiple screen resolutions — runs in 800×600 for compatibility with older machines, up to 1920×1200 for higher end machines

Anirah: Riddle of the Pharaohs

(costs $10)
Anirah is an ancient Egyptian-themed tile matching game similar in some ways to the game MahJongg. This is not a typical Match-3 type of game, however. In Anirah, you are given a target number and then can match as many tiles as it takes to total up to that number. Tiles can be selected if they can slide off the board – straight up, down, left, or right. You could make a match with three tiles, or ten tiles, or even just one tile. The goal is to clear the board and proceed to the next round. How many rounds can you survive?

Features:

  • 4 Gameplay Modes — including timed modes and Dice Modes that generate new target numbers after every match
  • 3 Difficulty Settings
  • 7 Sets of Tile Graphics
  • Geek Mode — the not-very-secret secret mode that really twists your mind (choose binary or new hexadecimal!)
  • Ridiculous Mode — which doesn’t number the tiles for an extra challenge (Only works on some graphic sets. I could have enabled it for all of them, but Stone? Papyrus? Come on, those would have been impossible!)
  • Built To Be Casual — you can quit at any time and Anirah will save your progress automatically
  • Multiple Screen Resolutions — runs in 800×600 for compatibility with older machines, up to 1920×1200 for higher end machines

Krum is an open source hack-n-slash cRPG that is being developed with Blender by one man named haidme from Bulgaria.
The game would be combat oriented 3rd person, gore heavy cRPG in which you will be in complete control of your moves and slice enemies to pieces.
You will have many weapons to choose from and attack to perform.
It’s a very professional and impressive looking game even for a team of developers, while the release date is unknown Krum promises a lot already.

I’ve asked haidme Krum’s developer a few questions (like a very mini interview) about the game :

Hello !
My name is Maxim and I am the editor of the LinuxGamingNews.org website.
Krum looks great and as it uses the Blender Game Engine I was wondering if a native Linux client will be released ?

Hello Maxim,
Krum is completely compatible with Linux OS. So, when the game is complete, I’ll release some free content native for Linux and Windows OSes.

Will the game be FOSS or proprietary ?
It is not decided yet…by now, the most important thing for me is to finish it.
Then I’ll think of the ways of distribution.
It is possible to be completely free and open source or not free but still open source. I just don’t know yet.

Could you tell me more about the game ?
Will it be like Diablo or NWN ? (hack-n-slash or deep quests), any other news about the game would be great.

Thanks for your interest.
Krum will be third/first person(first person is like an option, not completely supported) hack-n-slash role playing game.
The main focus will be on the battles, not the quests.
You will need to block, strike and dodge with the exact timing if you want to win the battle.
On the other hand battles will be fast and furious, mostly one on one…so the player will be able to focus on the fighting mechanics.
There will be combos, but unlike Prince of Persia or GoW, the player will have control over the character and will perform exact moves in exact order.
Blocking will be on of the most important fight mechanics.
About the quest..they will be simple and yet fascinating.
The environment will be rich and intractable.
The closest game title ,to what Krum will try to become is “Blade Of Darkness”.
Thanks again for your interest!

I’m sure you remember the great game “Die By The Sword” (which was ignored at the time because “Tomb Rider” took all the fame … who can resist this chick ? ).
Krum reminds me of it by the fact that you can slice enemies to pieces.
Will the “slices” be used as finishers or could you slice the leg for example and keep the enemy fighting ?
Will the slicing be performed at one hit or will it takes several hits to cut a body part ?
Any more info ?

Yes I remember “Die By The Sword”, it was a great game.
For now, the player in “Krum” is able to slice the enemies only
like a finisher moves. But you gave me a good idea for a new feature. Maybe I’ll try to implement it on a later stage in the game.
Some more info: Krum will be separated in 5 big levels. Each will consists of 3 sub levels.
I’ll try to describe the feeling (atmosphere) in them with one word for each: The Mountains, The Castle, The Underground Passage,The Swamps,The Wastelands.
Those are not levels names. Just a description of what to expect in them.
And one curious fact: Krum is left handed.
Thank you very much for the publication!

Hello !

The regular visitors of LGN must be wondering why there are no news lately…is the website dead ?
Well, it’s far from dead, in fact I have several new games in development to write about.
But my personal life has taken it’s toll … about a week ago the company I have worked for, for the past 3 years has gone bankrupt and everyone was fired including me.
So now that I’m unemployed and searching for a new job I’ve taken some time off.
It’s not that I don’t have time to write articles, I just don’t have that feeling I had before, like “I got to tell those people about this magnificent game NOW”.
Tomorrow I’m going to the dead sea to leave my problems there ;)
And I’ll be back refreshed with new games shortly.

Thanks
Maxim Bardin

A lot is going on with Basilisk Games, the bringers of the Eschalon Books cRPG series.

Basilisk games support their games well and didn’t forget about Book 1; recently they released 1.06 version which is compiled using the latest Ubuntu 10.04 libraries and should work better with newer distributions.
All you have to do to get the latest version is to email Basilisk Games with your purchase information (order number works best!) and they will activate a new download link for you.
But if you have no problems with your current version of Book 1, you don’t need the update as it offers no additional content.

Basilisk Games also announced the development of a completely free of charge extension to Book 2 ,called “The Secret of Fathamurk” :

Indianapolis, IN – September 3, 2010 – Basilisk Games, Inc. today announced the development of an add-on adventure for Eschalon: Book II called “The Secret of Fathamurk”.

This expansion for Eschalon: Book II will add 5-10 hours of new gameplay for fans of the game,” said Thomas Riegsecker, Lead Developer of the Eschalon series. “Better yet, we’re not charging players a dime for it. If you own Eschalon: Book II you will have access to this new content free-of-charge with the 1.05 update.”

Eschalon: Book II is available now for Windows, Macintosh and Linux based computers. “The Secret of Fathamurk” expansion will be included in the 1.05 update coming this October. Current owners need only to download the updated game to have access to this new content. The final release date for this update will be announced on the Basilisk Games website. Visit http://basiliskgames.com for more information.

You can find the FAQ about “The Secret of Fathamurk” here.

BasiliskWrangler also writes about the future of Basilisk Games :

So, after having surgery this week I’ve had a lot of time to sit around and ponder the future. I thought I’d share this with you under the stipulation that you realize this is just talk among friends; these are plans and in no way should be confused with “official announcements”.

For starters, let’s talk about Book II. It has sold well, but so far it has only sold half-as-many units as Book I has sold. Granted, Book I has been around for nearly 3 years and so it has had more time to sell, but I still think that we need to keep promoting Book II. There are many potential customers out there and we need to try to reach each one.

That brings us to the Book II add-on. We are getting ready to announce it and when we do, we are going to treat it almost as a “relaunch” of Book II. There are quite a few fixes and updates to the engine, and the additional content does reveal a bit more about the nature of the Orakur. I will likely adjust the difficulty of the game as well, to keep the upper levels challenging for veteran players.

So what else is in our future? Well, Book III is a certainty. We have all the tools, we have the customer base, and we have a story that needs to be finished. Book III is likely to be a smaller game than Book II in terms of physical world size, with a greater focus on the main quest and multiple endings. The cool thing is that we will release all our tools with Book III and we will actively work with the “mod community” to support new adventures made by fans.

We are also getting very excited about the new engine and game we have been working on for a couple years now. This new game will be developed along side of Book III. What can we tell you about it? Well…
- It’s being made with a brand-new game engine that feels kind of like “Wizardry 8″ or a really advanced “Dungeon Master” type of engine.
- It will be a sci-fi game, but it will be a “fringe” sci-fi game which means it will have some fantasy elements. Star Wars kind of fits this description.
- It will be party-based, turn-based, and be the “deepest” role-playing system we’ve ever made. We’re calling this system “Manticore”, which is an evolved version of Eschalon’s RPG system (which was called “Centaur” for all of you who are curious about such things.)

So, there are a lot of cool things in the works, but we need to focus on Book II for a while longer before we announce any of these plans.

I was hoping it would take longer so my last “contest”/giveaway will make sense – but now everyone can register a trial account and play 10 matches.
All you have to do is registered at this page : http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/fbtrial.php .

You will off course be able to play only no stats matches, then if you like you can buy a full account for $30.
It might look like a lot, but believe me if you like the game it’s worth it and will supply you with endless hours of fun.

S2Games the supporters of GNU/Linux and developers of Savage and Heroes Of Newerth games, have enabled the paid accounts to give two trial keys to anyone they wish.
Each trial key will let the player play 10 matches !

All you have to do is to register at the GamingOnLinux Forums and post !
Those who will register from today the 14/09/2010 till the end of the month and post at least 10 posts by the end of the month will enter the “contest”.
The winners will be chosen randomly from the posters and be published on 03/10/2010 .
It’s 1 post for ~45 minute of gameplay (on average), and the game is awesome !
Please do not post useless posts or spam, make it interesting.

So if you ever thought about buying HoN, but wasn’t really sure about it ans wanted to try the game, here’s your chance !

The people who registered before today, do not despair !
A random regular poster will win Amnesia: The Dark Descent on the 25th this month.

So what are you waiting for ?! register and start posting !

P.S
I know I’ve said I don’t want to make giveaways (I still don’t like the idea that much), but I got several prizes and so little contests people will actually take part in.
I just have to “get rid of those keys” ;) .

And I didn’t forget about the Amnesia: The Dark Descent contest, I am still thinking about it as I need to find something that people will actually participate in (and I have a few ideas).

Update : HoN Trial Is Now Open For Everyone !

After 3 long years of waiting Amnesia : The Dark Descent was finally released today !

Helsingborg, Sweden, 8/10 – 2010

We at Frictional Games are happy to announce that Amnesia: The Dark Descent is now available for instant download! This represent the culmination of the three years of hard work and we are very proud of the final result. We believe it to be a huge improvement over our previous work, the Penumbra series.

One of our goals with Amnesia: The Dark Descent has been “availability”, meaning that the game should be as available as possible for those that are interested in playing it. Because of this, the game is having a simultaneous launch on Windows, Mac and Linux. It also comes with four translations in addition to the original English version, is DRM free and available from most major online retailers in addition to our own online store. Finally, the game itself has also received our utmost attention in areas that affect the ease of use and interaction with the game world.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent is a first person horror game with a focus on immersion. It is a game where atmosphere and story comes first. We hope that the game will be a breeze of fresh air, in a genre otherwise populated by “one-man-army action hero” sagas. In Amnesia you are almost completely defenseless, something we believe not only makes the game a lot scarier, but also gives a vastly different experience.

Enter an interactive nightmare where reality is a fragile concept.

Do you have what it takes to survive?

Selected press quotes
Few games are able to conjure up an atmosphere this genuinely frightening.
- IGN

Despite its title, Amnesia remembers what the blockbusters of survival horror seem to have forgotten: how to horrify.
- PC Gamer UK

I think it is safe to say that Amnesia is the most successfully frightening game to have been made.
- Rock Paper Shotgun

I must say Amnesia is a masterpiece of horror, something surely all other horror games could take from and in some senses, strive to be.
- NeoSeeker

Frictional Games where kind enough to offer 2 copies of Amnesia to the winners of LGN next contest.
Although LGN had little luck in the previous contests, and as I’ve said earlier I do not want to just giveaway the games on random for no reason, I’ll have to think about something creative; something that more people could take part in.

So in several days I’ll write about the upcoming contest, but if you have more ideas feel free to comment below.

GamingOnLinux are on the other hand are having a giveaway of Amnesia to a random regular poster who registers and participates on their forums, so you got another chance to win Amnesia.
